National Diabetes Register
(work in progress)

Contact Person: Ms Lorinda Camilleri

The National Diabetes Register is currently being established as a unified system to support the monitoring, diagnosis, and management of diabetes in Malta. It is intended to provide structured, integrated access for health practitioners and clinicians across the healthcare system, creating a single source of information on disease occurrence, patterns of care, and health outcomes.

The Register is designed to ensure comprehensive population coverage, supporting ongoing surveillance, service planning, and future epidemiological research. The data collected will provide a better understanding of the national burden of diabetes and inform the evaluation and improvement of prevention strategies and clinical services.

The Register shall also be supporting opportunistic screening for secondary complications in Maltese diabetics.

All information will be recorded and maintained in compliance with the General Data Protection Regulation (EU) 2016/679 (GDPR) and national data protection legislation and will be used exclusively for public health and research purposes. The Register will serve as a resource for healthcare planning, policy development, and as a foundation for research into trends and outcomes in diabetes across Malta.
